Dead Wrong® with Johan Norberg – Are Grisly Games the Problem?

Twenty percent of school shooters play
violent video games regularly. This glorification
of violence must stop. Guns don’t kill people.
Gamers with guns kill people. Dead wrong. This used to be an obsession of Democratic
politicans like Hillary Clinton. But nowadays it’s a Right-wing talking
point, to distract attention from guns and white supremacy. But they’re both equally clueless. Yes, twenty percent of school
shooters play violent video games, but you know what? Seventy percent of male high school
students play violent video games. So if anything, we should
worry if they play too little. Time series of release dates
for violent games, sales and internet searches unexpectedly
turned up an association with a decrease in violent crime. If
government has a role, it should probably be to
subsidise violent games. Some studies have found a vague
association with some measures of aggressive emotions,
but they are very weak. One study found a statistically
insignificant correlation but, the upshot was that you would
have to play the most violent video games for 27 hours a day to effect some
sort of noticeable change in emotions. So ignore the
scaremongers and scapegoaters. But just for safety be sure to
limit your gaming activity to 26 hours a day. Hey wait! Don’t forget to subscribe to our channel here. And check out these other videos. And check back next Wednesday for a new Dead Wrong from Free To Choose Network.
